Digital skills
To make the most of many of the available smart energy options you’ll need some digital skills. For example, many products require a home WiFi connection and are controlled using an app on a smartphone or tablet.
Digital skills include:
- Using computers, other digital devices and apps.
- Digital communication.
- Handling information.
- Making online transactions or applications.
- Being safe online.
Not everyone is able to go online due to internet access and connectivity constraints or affordability of devices and contracts. Inaccessible information is another barrier.
Some people are not motivated to go online. As long as a family member, friend or carer can complete online tasks, that isn’t a problem.
Improving your digital skills
If you want to increase your digital skills and confidence try the following:
- Identify and focus on the skills you most need.
- Ask friends and family to show you first. Try out with them first.
- Check with your local authority, library, charities and adult education college for digital skills drop-in sessions or short courses.
- Keep practicing!
- Once you’ve got the hang of it, look for online courses.
