Smart meters
An energy smart meter records electricity or gas consumption every half hour. It sends automatic meter readings to your electricity supplier at least once a month and the same information to an in-home display (IHD) in your home. You can view your energy usage and cost either on the IHD, or on your online account with your energy supplier. You can view this information over different time periods (e.g. over a specific day, week, or year). It can help you to manage your fuel bill and energy use.
Half-hourly meter readings enable flexible, responsive use of energy in real time across the grid network. Consumers with a smart meter can:
- Make the most of renewable energy when it is available via time of use tariffs.
- Take up smart-enabled devices which in combination with an appropriate tariff can be used to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.
- Participate in flexibility services.
For those with solar panels, battery storage or an EV, a smart meter is essential to accurately record electricity stored or exported to the grid,
Note that smart meters don't work in homes where reliable access to a secure communication network is unavailable, for example some flats, or houses with thick walls, or in remote locations.
If you have questions or to get a smart meter, contact your energy supplier. They will arrange an installation free of charge.
